Art journal time is a special time for me. I don't like to rush it. Sometimes I will spend a long time just deciding where something will go or what colour I want to use. I turn the pages slowly, arrange cut out drawings in different ways, or sometimes I like to add details and embellish. I enjoy every minute of it. If someone was watching me do this, it would probably drive them bananas.

There are so many ways to make decorative paper, and then of course it can be used in countless creative projects....card making, Scrapbooking, mixed media pages in art journals, wrapping paper, covering hand made books, the list goes on. I like to be able to personalise the design on my papers, change the colours, and give them that lovely handmade look. I try to avoid using ready made papers, because then my work starts to look like everyone else's! Here are some suggestions about different ways to make and use decorative paper.

I spent a large part of my life in Queensland, Australia, a hot and humid place, where we didn't really experience Autumn like people do in other parts of the world. When I returned to my birthplace in Wellington, New Zealand as an adult, it was very special to see the autumn leaves and colors. Better still, I have been in South Korea for four years, where the seasons are even more defined and spectacular. Nature has always been a big influence on my artwork, but looking through my art journals, it occurred to me that autumn was one of the seasons that seems to have influenced me the most.

My art journal is for experimenting and having fun, not for creating 'perfect' works of art. In my art journal I have the freedom to play with different materials, try out and practice new techniques, and make many mistakes. Some of my mistakes have turned into my best ideas! I use a mixture of cheap and expensive materials, and whatever I have on hand.
Sometimes I take an image that appeals to me, and I repeat it many times in different ways, to see which looks the best. A great technique which lends itself perfectly to this is printmaking, because you can make a print of one image over and over again. Then you can go crazy and have fun adding colour and details to your heart's content. The image above is an example from my art journal, with the same portait used many times.
